Expression swings are one of those small playground finds that make a big difference with a baby or toddler in tow. Here is where to find face-to-face swings across Christchurch.
There’s something genuinely lovely about an expression swing. You sit opposite your little one, both of you at eye level, swinging together. It’s one of those simple things that makes a playground trip feel like a moment worth having.
Also known as face-to-face swings or “you and me” swings, expression swings are designed for a parent or caregiver and a baby or toddler to use at the same time, facing each other. They’re brilliant for babies and young toddlers who aren’t ready for a standard swing yet, and for parents who want more than just pushing a kid away from them repeatedly.
Christchurch has several dotted across the city. Here’s where to find them.

What is an expression swing?
An expression swing (also called a You and Me swing or face-to-face swing) is a two-person swing where the adult and child sit opposite each other on a shared frame. Unlike a standard toddler bucket swing, the design means you can see your child’s face, make eye contact, and swing together at the same time.
They’re particularly popular with parents of babies and young toddlers. If you’re looking for more to do with a baby in Christchurch, take a look at our baby activity guide for swim classes, sensory play, and free outdoor spots across the city.

St Martins Park
It’s a smaller playground, but the expression swing is the main draw here. The large grassy area makes it a nice spot for a picnic on a fine day, and it’s a good local option for babies and young toddlers.

Millhaven Park, Styx
Tucked inside the newer Oakmill subdivision, Millhaven Park punches above its weight. The pump track with its “giveaway” and “stop” signs is a hit with slightly older kids, and the expression swing gives parents of tots something to do alongside them. A little off the beaten track, but worth it once you’ve found it.

Picton Reserve Playground, Riccarton
A short walk from Westfield Riccarton, Picton Reserve Playground has a unique climbing structure and an expression swing. A solid pit stop before or after a shopping trip if you need to burn off some toddler energy.
