October is around the corner, and with it comes the delightful chaos of school holidays. Whether your kids are budding artists, adventurous explorers, or just keen to have some fun, Christchurch has plenty on offer to keep them entertained. We’ve rounded up the best October school holiday events happening over the next few weeks, so be sure to check back and mark these in your diary for the month ahead.

Mini Explorers: Guided Trail Through Riccarton House

Mini Explorers: Guided Trail of Riccarton House

Mini Explorers offers a unique guided trail through the enchanting Riccarton House. Young adventurers aged 3 to 13 will have a blast discovering the secrets of the cottage, the old kitchen, and the mysterious attic. With a cosy maximum of 15 children per group, each curious mind can fully engage in the fun. As a cherry on top, every explorer receives a free fluffy from The Quarters Cafe. No need to reserve a spot—just arrive early to avoid disappointment.

When: Monday, 30 September – Thursday, 3 October & Monday 7 October – Thursday, 10 October, 11am – 12pm.

Quail Island Pirate Hunt

Set sail for an exciting pirate adventure! Explore Quail Island, find hidden pirates, and earn chocolate coins. Dress up and enjoy a family outing with the chance to win a nature cruise voucher.

When: Saturday, 28 September – Monday, 30 September, 10.15am and 12.15pm

Canterbury Horticultural Society School Holiday Programmes

Let your child’s creativity blossom with a range of hands-on workshops. They can paint a clay pot, mould a custom badge, and plant a fragrant flower to take home. With sessions that include creating magical kingdoms and making scented potions, it’s a perfect way for kids aged 3 to 12 to unleash their imaginations.

When: Monday, 30 September, Tuesday 1, 3 & 7 October; choose from two morning or afternoon sessions per day.

Indoor Bubble Show with Nanogirl

Dive into a world of bubbles at Merivale Mall. This 45-minute show features giant bubbles and fun interactive experiences. Kids can even step inside a bubble—an unforgettable experience for little ones!

The Lil Brew Treasure Trail

The Lil Brew Treasure Trail invites kids to unleash their inner explorers along the picturesque Coastal Pathway. From Barnett Park to the Sumner Surf Club, painted stones await discovery, each holding the promise of a prize back at Lil Brew. With new stones hidden daily, every outing is a fresh adventure! Snap a cheeky selfie with your find and tag them to join in the fun. Just one stone per child per day, please—return them to keep the excitement rolling.

October School Holiday Events: Badjelly the witch glow show

Messy Mates Sessions

Waterworld Waterpark

One of the coolest October school holiday events, Waterworld is bringing the fun to Christchurch with its first-ever indoor mega waterpark. Most sessions are open to anyone five and older, but there are special times to accommodate various need —check out the 5-8-year-olds’ sessions at 9.30 am and 10.30 am. If you’re looking for a girls-only vibe, swing by at 1.30 pm on the 10th and 11th. Plus, there’s a sensory-sensitive session at 8.30 am on the 11th. And for the teens, evening sessions at 6.30 pm and 7:.0 pm on the 11th keep the fun going.

Agents of Discovery: Lancaster Park

Inflatable Sports Extravaganza

Bike Jam at Kakaha Park
