Boyds Blueberries

A short drive from Christchurch, offering competitive blueberry prices in the region, Boyds is perfect for those wanting to stock up for freezing.

Important note for visitors: Google Maps does not reliably direct people to the correct entrance for this property. Visitors are strongly encouraged to use the address link provided on the Boyds website or Facebook page, which will take them directly to the gate. Google listed opening hours may also be inaccurate, so checking official channels before visiting is recommended.

Due to heavy traffic on Shands Road, particularly during peak commuting times, the safest way to access the property is to drive approximately 200 metres past the entrance to Alameda Place, complete a U-turn where the road is wider, and then double back.

On arrival, visitors should look for the number 828 clearly displayed at the driveway entrance. If that number is not visible, visitors are not at the correct property. Parking is available on site, with access via the right hand side of the property past the house and up toward the blueberry orchard. Shaded parking under trees is also available.

Berry Picking Tips: Make the Most of Your Visit

Before You Go

  1. Check Facebook pages – Farms update availability daily based on weather and crop conditions
  2. Go early – Best selection and cooler temperatures (especially January/February)
  3. Dress appropriately – Sunhat, sunscreen, comfortable closed-toe shoes
  4. Bring containers – Most farms provide punnets, but BYO can be easier for transport
  5. Bring cash – While many accept EFTPOS, some are cash-only or have minimum EFTPOS amounts
  6. Plan for shade breaks – Particularly important with young children
  7. Check current pricing – Prices may vary from estimates; confirm with farms directly

While Picking

  1. Pick gently – Ripe berries come off easily; don’t force them
  2. Check underneath – Best berries often hide under leaves
  3. Sample as you go – Most farms encourage tasting to find the ripest fruit
  4. Keep berries cool – Bring a cooler bag for the car journey home
  5. Supervise children – Teach them to identify ripe vs unripe berries
  6. Take photos – Great family memories and social media content!

After Picking

  1. Refrigerate immediately – Berries are most perishable when freshly picked
  2. Don’t wash until ready to use – Moisture accelerates spoilage
  3. Freeze extras within 24 hours – Spread on trays, freeze, then bag
  4. Make jam promptly – Use slightly underripe berries for best pectin content

  • Preserves: Jams, jellies, chutneys, compotes

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: When is the best time to go berry picking in Christchurch? A: Peak season is January, but berries are available from mid-December through February. Visit early morning or weekdays for the best selection.

Q: How much should I budget for a family berry picking trip? A: Expect to pick 2-5kg for a family of four (approximately $50-120 in 2025/26 season), plus extras like ice cream. Most farms have a minimum pick requirement.

Q: Can I bring my dog berry picking? A: Most farms do not allow dogs due to health and safety regulations. Always check individual farm policies first.

Q: What’s the difference between blueberries and raspberries for picking? A: Blueberries are easier for young children (sturdier, less delicate) and better for freezing. Raspberries are more delicate, highly perishable, and excellent for fresh eating and jam.

Q: Do I need to book in advance? A: Most Christchurch berry farms operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Booking is generally not required, but check Facebook pages for any changes.

Q: What if it rains on the day I want to go? A: Many farms close during rain or when the ground is too wet. Always check the farm’s Facebook page for weather updates before heading out.

Q: Are the berries organic? A: Most local farms practice sustainable growing methods. Contact individual farms directly for specific information about their growing practices.

Q: Have prices gone up from last season? A: Like most fresh produce, berry prices typically increase year-on-year. Expect prices to be approximately 5-10% higher than the 2024/25 season. Always confirm current pricing with farms before visiting.

Q: Can I pick my own strawberries in Christchurch? A: Unfortunately, there are currently no pick-your-own strawberry farms operating in the Christchurch area for the 2025/26 season. Most local farms focus on raspberries and blueberries. However, you can often find fresh strawberries available for purchase at some berry farms (like Berries Direct when in stock) and at Christchurch farmers markets. If you’re willing to travel further, some Canterbury farms outside the immediate Christchurch area may offer strawberry picking – check local farming groups on Facebook for updates.
