Where to watch planes with kids in Christchurch: Park up at these top spots to watch take-offs and landings:

Western End of Harewood Road

Early birds, this one’s for you. From sunrise to around 11am, the western end of Harewood Road serves up clear, unobstructed views over the airfield fence. There’s a small rise here that gives you the perfect vantage point for morning plane-watching. Pro tip: the road’s currently closed to vehicles, so you’ll need to park up and walk — but hey, it’s a great chance to let the kids burn off some energy before you settle in for some aviation action.

Pound Road

If you’re keen to catch Runway 02 arrivals, Pound Road is where you want to be. It’s especially gorgeous from 1pm to sunset, when the lighting is just chef’s kiss for photos. Wander along different points on the road for varied landing angles — it’s a brilliant way to keep things interesting if you’ve got restless kids who need a bit of exploring mixed into their planespotting.

Wairakei Road

Got an aspiring photographer in the family? Wairakei Road is your go-to for night-time magic. Large, wide-body aircraft taxi past here after dark, making it a dream spot for long-exposure shots (or just admiring the twinkling lights and engine roars). You can also spy the aircraft parked on the Antarctic Apron. Just remember: this is a busy road, so keep little ones close and eyes peeled for traffic.

Aviation Drive

Want the full panoramic experience? Aviation Drive gives you sweeping views of both Runway 02 and Runway 20. The best time for photos here is the afternoon and evening, when the light hits just right and you can even capture the tower and Port Hills in the background. With a bit of patience and the right spot, you’ll feel like you’re front-row at an aviation show — minus the ticket price.

Family watching planes at Christchurch Airport

Outside the Novotel

Who says you need to stay at the Novotel to enjoy its perks? On the south side of the hotel, you can get wonderfully close views of the planes parked on the Antarctic Apron — and it’s a fab spot both day and night. Whether you’re popping by after a family dinner or making it part of your weekend adventure, this is one of the easiest places to give the kids a thrilling view without much planning.

End of Grays Road

If you’ve lived in Canterbury for more than five minutes, you’ll know the Nor’wester can pack a punch. Thankfully, the end of Grays Road offers great shelter when the wind’s showing off. It’s a family favourite for a reason: you get fantastic views of the runway action, and the kids can marvel at the planes without being blown sideways. Pack some snacks, bring the binoculars, and let them enjoy the drama of take-offs and landings up close.

Top Plane Spotting Tips

Remember, safety first: these are public viewing spots, so always keep an eye on kids, watch for cars, and be respectful of the space. Bring snacks, water, and maybe even a blanket or chairs if you’re planning a longer stay. And don’t forget to pack your camera or phone — because nothing says family adventure like snapping that perfect shot of a plane soaring overhead.
