What’s on for kids this weekend:

Makers & Creators Market

A brand-new community market bringing together local artisans, crafters, and makers in one vibrant space. Expect 45+ stalls packed with handmade jewellery, skincare, candles, knitwear, artwork, sweet treats, and more. There’s even face painting and hair braiding to keep the kids entertained while you browse.

When: Saturday, 5 April, 9am-1pm

Steam Extravaganza

Steam Extravaganza

Trains, traction engines, and steam-powered everything—this annual event is a must for any little (or big) transport enthusiast. Free rides, heavy horse farrier competitions, and a display of pre-1920 veteran cars make it a day packed with action. Plus, there’ll be plenty of food trucks on hand for when all that excitement works up an appetite.

When: Saturday, 5 April, 9am-4pm

Canterbury Breastfeeding Big Latch On 2025

A celebration of breast/chestfeeding in a whānau-friendly space, complete with a selfie booth, soft play, face painting, live music, lawn games, and spot prizes. The Big Latch On Quiz at 1pm brings a bit of friendly competition, so bring your A-game!

When: Saturday, 5 April, 11am-4pm

Tracking Tunnels, Bird Protectors | Predator Free Adventure

Get hands-on with conservation at this interactive event where kids can build tracking tunnels and learn how to protect native birds. There’s even an exciting egg search to keep things fun while learning about the importance of a predator-free Aotearoa.

Where: Christchurch Botanic Gardens

Ferrymead Night Market

Ferrymead Night Market

Take a stroll through history while enjoying local food vendors, craft beers, live music, and train and tram rides. The Heritage Park transforms at night, making it a magical spot to explore with the kids. Bring cash for some stalls and a lead if you’re bringing the dog!

When: Saturday, 5 April, 4pm-8pm
Where: Ferrymead Heritage Park, 50 Ferrymead Park Drive
How much: $5 per adult, under 15s are free

Little River Pumpkin Festival

New Zealand’s biggest pumpkin festival returns with all things pumpkin—soup, pie, scones, and more. Not a pumpkin fan? No worries—there’s also burgers, sushi, pizza, and paella. Expect art & craft stalls, live music, bouncy castles, balloon art, and magic shows to keep the whole family entertained.

When: Sunday, 6 April, 10.30am-3pm
Where: Little River
How much: $10 per vehicle (proceeds go to Little River Primary School)

Christchurch Kids Market

Run by kids, for kids (but with goodies for adults, too). Support young entrepreneurs as they sell preloved toys, books, clothes, handmade gifts, arts and crafts, plants, and sweet treats. A great way to teach kids about business while embracing the ethos of reduce, reuse, relove.

When: Sunday, 6 April, 10.30am-12.30pm
Where: Mount Pleasant Community Centre
How much: Free entry
