Labour Day weekend is upon us, and it’s the perfect time to shake up the routine with some family-friendly events in Christchurch—weather permitting, of course, as we’re hoping the rain holds off! With music, markets, and activities galore, there’s plenty to keep the kids entertained. Here’s a look at what’s on for kids this weekend…

What’s on for kids this weekend:
Rangiora A&P Show
This event showcases impressive equestrian talent and offers a fantastic lineup of activities for kids. They’ll have a blast getting up close to sheep, cattle, and even alpacas. Don’t miss the motorbike stunt riders and the ever-popular terrier race—both guaranteed to keep everyone entertained! Plus, the home & craft pavilion is filled with creative entries, from baking to knitting. And with an abundance of food stalls, there’s no chance of going hungry.
When: Friday, 25 – Saturday, 26 October, 8-5pm. Note that Friday is for equestrian entries only.

Board Games By The Bay
Calling all board game lovers! This Labour Weekend, the Hornby Club is the place to be for Christchurch’s biggest board gaming event. Happening on October 26th and 27th, there will be two full days of gaming excitement. Kids under 12 can join for free with a supervising adult. With a huge games library to explore and friendly helpers ready to teach new games, it’s a great opportunity to try something different. Plus, there will be food and drink available to keep everyone fueled for fun.
When: Saturday, 26 – Sunday, 27 October, 10-6pm

Trick or Treating at The Hub Hornby
Halloween is coming early at The Hub Hornby, and kids are invited to don their favourite costumes for a fun-filled afternoon. Local shops will have treats (and a few silly tricks!) ready to hand out, but be sure to arrive early since goodies are limited. Parents, lend a hand to ensure little ghosts and goblins visit each retailer just once. With spot prizes and a few surprises thrown in, it’s bound to be a spooky good time!

Saturday Bands at Riverside Market

Labour Weekend Steam Train
Celebrate 60 years of rail heritage this Labour Weekend with all-day train rides on Sunday, October 27th. It’s a great chance for families to hop on board and experience the joy of train travel. Tickets are wallet-friendly, and kids will love the chance to ride the rails! Just remember, train tickets are separate from park entry fees, which go towards keeping the railway running.

Join in on the last few days of the Christchurch Heritage Festival at The Arts Centre, where you can expect live music and explore the heritage of the 70s.
