Christchurch is in for a cracker of a weekend, with buzzing bees, swinging markets, teddy bears on picnics, and a proper countryside show that’s been part of Kiwi life for over 160 years. Here’s where to take the kids, soak up the sunshine, and make the most of the long weekend ahead.

What’s on for kids this weekend in Christchurch:

Royal A&P Show of New Zealand

Royal A&P Show of New Zealand | Canterbury A&P Association
It’s all happening at Canterbury Agricultural Park this weekend — three full days of non-stop family fun. Watch world-class showjumping, the high-speed shearing competitions, and the crowd-favourite woodchopping events. Kids can meet the friendly animals at the Hazlett City Farmyard, cheer on the gumboot throwers, and even spot a helicopter or two. With over 400 trade sites and the South Island’s biggest line-up of food trucks, there’s no chance of anyone going hungry. And for the little ones, the Messy Mates tent, Music with Michal performance, and Arion Farm petting zoo are not to be missed.

When: Thursday 13 November to Saturday 15 November 2025, 9.30am to 4.30pm

The Seekers Mākete
The Seekers Mākete is the kind of spot you wander into and don’t want to leave. Every Saturday, The Arts Centre comes alive with handmade treasures, live music, and the smell of fresh street food. There’s something for everyone – from pottery and art to jewellery and homewares – plus a new rainbow swing installation that’s bound to be a hit with the kids. Grab a pastry, find a sunny spot, and soak up the atmosphere.

The Secret Life of Bees – Bee Awesome and Envirokids
If your little ones love getting hands-on in nature, this one’s a sweet treat. Buzz along to Te Māra Huaota o Waipapa and step into the fascinating world of the honeybee. Kids can try their hand at foraging, learn the famous waggle dance, and discover why teamwork is everything in a hive. It’s an interactive session filled with learning, laughter, and plenty of bee puns. Brought to life by Bee Awesome and Envirokids, this is one experience that will leave tamariki buzzing.

Teddy Bear’s Picnic in Growing New Brighton

Teddy Bear’s Picnic | Growing New Brighton
Pack the picnic rug and don’t forget your teddy. The annual Teddy Bear’s Picnic is back at Rawhiti Domain for a day of outdoor fun and community spirit. Expect laughter, games, and plenty of bear hugs as families gather to celebrate their fluffiest friends. It’s a classic event that’s perfect for little ones and their favourite soft toys.

When: Sunday 16 November 2025, 11am to 1.30pm

Pop-Up Play Reserve
End the weekend with some good, old-fashioned outdoor play at the Linwood Waterway. The Pop-Up Play Reserve is packed with open-ended play gear – think mud kitchens, tree swings, slacklines, and stacks of planks and boxes for tamariki to build and create their own adventures. It’s hands-on, messy, and completely free. The team behind it are all about helping families connect with nature and encouraging kids to play their way.
